David Pleggenkuhle, IT-Cybersecurity and Network Administration program
Q: Why did you choose this IT program at Western, and what has made it an excellent fit for you?
DP: I chose the Cybersecurity & Network Administration program because of my passion for all things IT and because of recommendations from previous graduates of the same program who advised just how much career security the program provides.
Q. How do you see this program setting you up for a stable, successful future in IT?
DP:The Cybersecurity & Network Administration program does a fantastic job at teaching all the basics of IT, cybersecurity, and networking by starting small and eventually working your way through advanced concepts and operations. Having this knowledge is incredibly fundamental to starting your career, not only in cybersecurity but in all IT-related fields.
Q: What would you tell someone considering this program—why is it a smart choice?
DP: I believe that Cybersecurity & Network Administration is the best IT field to pursue as the world becomes increasingly integrated with technology and moves more of its resources online. The more connected everything becomes the greater the need for proper security, management, and availability, which is exactly what you will learn in this program.
Q: What have been the most valuable hands-on learning experiences in your coursework?
DP: My favorite experience in the Cybersecurity & Network Administration program was constructing my own personal network, which included routers, Layer 2 and Layer 3 switches, access points, a fully configured Windows domain with RADIUS authentication, multiple end users, and seamless Wi-Fi integration. This hands-on experience helps you fully understand multiple components required for modern enterprise networks.
Q: What skills or experiences have you gained that make you feel career-ready? Do you have post-graduation plans? If yes, what are they?
DP: The skills I immediately applied in my career were those taught in the Windows Administration classes, as over 70% of the business world relies on Windows-based operating systems. Currently, I am working as a Systems Field Technician Intern, but I also interviewed for a full-time Systems Administrator Level 1 position at EO Johnson Locknet, which I got and will begin after graduation!
Q: What resources or services at Western have been most beneficial to you, if any?
DP: I have used Career Services as a sounding board for advice on my resume, cover letter, and references. They are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly.
Q: What has been the most exciting part of learning cybersecurity at Western, and how has it prepared you for real-world challenges?
DP: Cybersecurity is a highly in-demand field, but it also presents unique challenges. Because of this, you must relearn how to approach specific problems, as there are multiple layers to consider to ensure security. Throughout your time in the Cybersecurity program, these layers will become second nature as you explore the best ways to secure your networks. I find this perspective on cybersecurity problems incredibly exciting, and it has only fueled my passion for IT even further.
Q: How do you see this program setting you up for a stable, rewarding network security or IT administration career?
DP: The Cybersecurity & Network Administration program provides a strong IT, cybersecurity, and networking foundation. It starts with fundamental concepts and progressively builds toward more advanced operations, ensuring a comprehensive understanding. This knowledge is not only crucial for a career in cybersecurity but also valuable across all IT-related fields.
