Angel JangAh Thao: Cybersecurity and Network Administration Program

Q: Why did you choose this IT program at Western, and what has made it an excellent fit for you?
AJT: I chose the Western IT program, Cybersecurity and Network Administration, because it was a completely new field I was interested in exploring. I knew that to gain a strong foundation and real-world experience, I needed more than just an online certificate. Enrolling at Western provided the structure, resources, and motivation to fully commit to my education. The program has been an excellent fit thanks to its supportive environment, experienced instructors, and hands-on learning opportunities that prepare students for real-world IT challenges.

Q: How do you see this program setting you up for a stable, prosperous future in IT?
AJT:
Enrolling in the Cybersecurity and Network Administration program at Western has been one of the best decisions I’ve made for my future in IT. In today’s tech-driven world, cybersecurity and networking are more crucial than ever, and this program has equipped me with the essential skills to pursue a stable and successful career. As technology rapidly advances, the knowledge I’ve gained—such as securing networks and protecting sensitive data—will always be in demand. These skills are vital for safeguarding information in our increasingly digital world, whether in business or personal settings.

Q: What have been the most valuable hands-on learning experiences in your coursework?
AJT:
The most valuable hands-on experiences have come from working with real-world cybersecurity tools such as firewalls and intrusion detection systems. For instance, I created a virtual network using VMware, gaining practical experience in setting up and managing virtual environments—an essential skill for modern IT infrastructures. I then secured this network by configuring a server and implementing an Endian firewall, which taught me how to monitor and maintain critical security components.

One of the most important skills I developed during this process was troubleshooting. Whether identifying and mitigating threats or resolving configuration issues, I learned to analyze logs, diagnose network anomalies, and implement effective solutions. These experiences sharpened my problem-solving skills and gave me the confidence to handle real-world security challenges.

Q: What skills or experiences have you gained that make you feel career-ready? Do you have post-graduation plans?
AJT: This program has equipped me with the technical skills and mindset needed to succeed in IT. One of the most valuable skills I’ve developed is resourcefulness—learning how to research, document, and navigate new software and applications to achieve results.

After graduation, I plan to apply these skills in a dynamic IT environment where I can continue growing and making a meaningful impact in network security and administration.

Cybersecurity Questions

Q: How has working with real-world cybersecurity tools like firewalls and intrusion detection systems prepared you for a career in IT security?
AJT: Working with real-world cybersecurity tools has been invaluable in preparing me for a career in IT security. Through projects such as setting up a virtual network in VMware and securing it with an Endian firewall, I gained firsthand experience in configuring, monitoring, and maintaining security systems.

A major takeaway from this experience was troubleshooting. I learned to methodically analyze logs, detect anomalies, and apply security measures to protect data integrity. These skills are essential in the fast-evolving world of cybersecurity, where quick thinking and problem-solving are critical.

My instructor, Scot Wiedenfeld, who taught Network Security I in Fall 2024, greatly enhanced this learning process. His expertise and guidance helped me develop a solid understanding of network security concepts and best practices.

Overall, working with these tools strengthened my technical abilities and instilled a proactive mindset toward securing information systems.

Q: What’s been the most valuable hands-on experience you’ve had in the program, and how has it shaped your confidence in the field?
AJT: One of the most valuable hands-on experiences I’ve had was working with actual networking equipment in the Cisco program, thanks to my instructor, Brandon Frank. At first, it felt intimidating—I was afraid of breaking something. The hardware appeared complex, and I felt pressure to handle it correctly. However, over time, this challenge transformed into a significant learning opportunity.

Through hands-on practice, I learned to troubleshoot and repair networking issues. Rather than fearing mistakes, I began to embrace them as part of the learning process. Each issue I resolved deepened my understanding and sharpened my skills.

This experience taught me the importance of a systematic approach to troubleshooting and how to stay calm and think clearly under pressure. Working with Cisco’s equipment gave me a strong grasp of networking concepts and how they apply in real-world IT settings. Thanks to this hands-on experience, I feel confident in tackling IT security challenges with a problem-solving mindset.

If you could design your dream tech gadget or software, what would it be and why?

If I could design my dream gadget, it would be an advanced personal probability calculator app. It would sync with wearables like Fitbits or smart glasses and track daily habits—everything from coffee intake to how often I say yes or no—learning from my decisions over time.

Through a voice-activated virtual assistant, I could ask for the best outcomes of any choice and get personalized guidance toward my goals. Features would include AI-based coaching, health and wellness monitoring, smart home integration, and even an AR interface to overlay real-time recommendations.

As someone with ADHD, I often swing between hyper-productivity and feeling stuck. This tool would help me manage time, reduce stress, stay focused, and make better decisions—all while adapting to me. It’s a game-changer I wish already existed.
