Athletics Update: 12-11


Western Technical College’s basketball teams were in action over the weekend with a string of non conference contests.

The women’s team lost a close game to Madison College 64-61 on Dec. 5. Western was down nine at the half, and couldn’t make up for lost ground in the third and fourth quarters. Kerrigan Lyga was the leader scorer for the Cavaliers, putting up 25 points. She also led with nine rebounds.

Two days later, the Cavaliers defeated Rainy River CC 86-76. The game was close throughout, but Western pulled away in the fourth, outscoring Rainy River by eight. Lyga once again led the team with 26 points. Rylee Gabel had a double-double, putting up 11 points and 10 rebounds. 

On Saturday, Dec. 8, Western lost to Hibbing CC 77-56. Krysten Lawyer led the team with 10 points and seven rebounds. 

Given the updated scores, the Cavaliers sit at 5-4 in the conference standings, in second place. They next play against Bay College on Friday afternoon at Geoebic Community College, as part of the Gogebic Winter Classic. 

On the men’s side, the Cavaliers lost to Madison College 90-77 on Dec. 5. The game was tied at half 38-38, but Madison College outscored Western by 13 points in the second half. Four Cavaliers scored in double figures; Josh Brownlee, Kadar Farah, and Andrew Scott, and Mhalik Lindsey. 

Western also lost Rainy River CC 97-63 on Dec. 7. Lindsey and Kyle Winger were the only players to score in double figures. Justen Kidd led the team with nine rebounds.

The Cavaliers also lost a tough game to Hibbing CC 85-79 on Dec. 8. Lindsey once again led Western with 18 points. 

Following the weekend slate of games, Western is 4-5 on the season. They next play against Bay College Friday afternoon in the Gogebic Winter Classic as well.
