Western Technical College’s women’s basketball team won the 2019-20 Division III National Championship, defeating Northland Community and Technical College 69-60 on Friday, March 13 at Rock Valley Community College in Rockford, Illinois.
The game did not start out strong for the Cavaliers. Western fell behind 36-27 at halftime, but came back swinging in the second half, outscoring Northland 23-7 in the third quarter. The Cavaliers kept Northland at bay in the fourth quarter by making key shots and clutch free throws. Lindsey Murphy led the team with 15 points, followed by tournament MVP Caitlin Young, who had 14 points.
The tournament was played amid concerns over the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19). All tournament games were closed to the public. The three-day tournament was condensed to two days, with winners of the semifinal games playing the same day for the championship.
This is the first NJCAA championship for Western Technical College in any sport. Congratulations to our Cavaliers!
