We are expanding our popular series by looking beyond instructors into roles that work with students on a regular basis outside of the classroom. Below, we feature Financial Office Assistant Janessa Horstman!
-What do you do on campus?
I work in the Office of Student Financial Aid. I assist students with the financial aid process and answer questions related to financial aid.
-Where is your favorite place at Western?
My favorite place on campus is the Union Market and the courtyard outside the Union Market. It is a great place were students and staff can gather. It gives you a change to run into others that you don’t see every day. It is also a great place to see students interacting with one another outside of the classroom.
-What are your hobbies?
I enjoy reading, outdoor activities such as fishing, and spending time with my family.
-Advice for students?
I have three pieces of advice. 1) It is okay to change your mind. Sometimes you start out in a program only to discover that it is not for you. That is okay. Take the time to figure out what you enjoy.
2). Trust your education. The knowledge and skill that you will receive after attending a Western program will help you in your future position.
3). Take the time to experience all that Western has to offer. Whether it is joining a club that interest you, attending some of the amazing events that Western has to offer or participating in the Study Abroad option. My experience with our Study Abroad program helped me experience different cultures and I am very thankful for having the opportunity to experience it.
