Western Technical College’s Shaundel Spivey will be presented the 2018 Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership Award at the La Crosse area Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday community celebration on Monday, Jan. 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Viterbo University’s Fine Arts Center, 900 Viterbo Drive, La Crosse.
Spivey, originally from Milwaukee, has shown a strong commitment to social justice and educational opportunities for La Crosse’s youth. In his role as the cultural liaison for the School District of La Crosse, Spivey led the creation of the annual Black Youth Summit, giving minority youth an opportunity to learn more about African American culture. During his time at the school district, he also created the organization, Black Leaders Acquiring Collective Knowledge (B.L.A.C.K.), which sponsored a week-long trip to visit cultural attractions and historically black colleges near Washington D.C. last year.
Spivey has received numerous awards for his work in the black community from community leaders and organizations. He now serves as the college connections manager for Western, overseeing admissions, registration, and K-12 relations for the college. He hopes to use this position to expand higher learning opportunities for students of color in the La Crosse area.
“Being a community advocate or leader does not go without its own struggles and pain,” said Spivey. “It is selfless work that we do to ensure that our community is a safe, just, and equitable place. It is such an honor to be able to receive such an award.”
