Western’s basketball teams had a busy weekend, and both teams are trying to keep up their hot starts.
On the men’s side, the Cavaliers lost a close game to Itasca CC on Friday, Nov. 30 by a score of 73-70. The game was tied at 36 at halftime, but Itasca outscored Western 37-34 in the second half. Joe Georgeson led the team with 15 points off the bench. Andrew Scott had a double-double, with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Western then defeated Northland CTC 87-56 on Saturday, Dec. 1. Western controlled the game throughout, outscoring the Pioneers 48-24 in the second half. Jason Gurholt, Joshua Brownlee, and Kadar Farah led the team with 11 points each. Farah led the team in rebounds with nine.
With the split over the weekend, the Cavaliers are 4-2 on the season. They next play at Madison College on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 7:30 p.m.
The women’s team was also in action this weekend. Western defeated Itasca CC 77-57 on Friday evening. Itasca actually led after the first quarter, before the Cavaliers outscored them by 12 points in the second. Krysten Lawver led the team with 14 points. Rylee Gabel contributed with a double-double, with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The Cavaliers then lost to Northland CTC 62-53 on Saturday. Western actually led after the first quarter, but was outscored from that point on. Kerrigan Lyga led the team with 14 points. Casey Moger led the team with 10 rebounds.
The split puts the women’s squad at 4-2 on the season as well. Similar to the men’s team, the women’s squad will play at Madison College Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m.
