Athletics Update: 12-18

Western’s athletic teams were busy in action this past weekend, preparing for the final stretch of 2018. 

On the women’s side, the Cavaliers split their weekend slate of games. Western lost to Bay College at the Gogebic Winter Classic Friday afternoon, 43-33. The Cavaliers actually led after the first quarter, but Bay College pulled away the the final quarter, outscoring Western 19-12. Kerrigan Lyga led the team with 11 points. Casey Moger provided six rebounds. 

On Saturday, the Cavaliers defeated Gogebic Community College 76-63. Caitlin Young led the team with 15 points off the bench. Kerrigan Lyga also provided 14 points and nine rebounds.

The weekend’s slate puts the team at 6-5 on the season, in second place in the MCAC Southern Division.

On the men’s side, Western also split their weekend slate of games. The Cavaliers lost to Bay College on Friday by a score of 71-51. Mhalik Lindsey led the team with 16 points off the bench. He also provided nine rebounds.

On Saturday, the Cavaliers defeated Gogebic Community College 79-69. Three players scored in double figures, Joshua Brownlee, Kyle Wingert, and Jason Gurholt. 

The split of games puts the team at 5-6 on the season. Both teams have the rest of the month off, with play resuming Wednesday, Jan. 9 against Ridgewater.
